Keynote Speaker:

Joe Wheatley, EnPro Industries

Joe Wheatley helped establish EnPro Learning System (ELS) and leads the management consulting group. Joe has held various leadership positions in manufacturing, engineering and EHS (Environmental, Health and Safety) within the electronic, semiconductor, biomedical, metal working, plastics and chemical industries. He led EnPro's safety programs to a world class level, being the only three time recipient of America’s Safest Company.  Joe has been instrumental in development of EnPro Learning System’s cultural development approach, behavior based tools and practices.  

Joe is a regular keynote speaker at safety events including the National Safety Council in 2014, Manufacturers Alliance, and other trade organizations, as well as a past advisor on the Liberty Mutual Loss Control advisory board and a current member of the Wells Fargo Insurance Client Advisory Council. He has published articles on safety organizational change and safety culture in prominent publications. Joe received a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from Florida State University, a M.S. in Environmental Management from Florida Institute of Technology, and an Executive MBA from Queens University, and is a licensed Professional Engineer.  

 

Our keynote speaker will explore the basic building blocks of the EnPro Industries safety culture approach and how it can be utilized to address all key aspects of an effective safety system, including safety as a core value, individual habits and behaviors, collective action, and cultural development. You will learn how to apply two of EnPro’s safety system tools to develop safety leadership and employee engagement at your organization – key issues facing any leader who wants to eliminate workplace injuries.

The keynote will be followed by a panel discussion led by SBCA safety experts about creating and maintaining a safety culture in a truss plant.

Panelists: 

Kent Pagel, Pagel Davis & Hill, P.C. 

As SBCA legal counsel, Kent has been helping CMs manage design responsibility risks and liabilities since 1994. As president of the Houston, Texas law firm of Pagel, Davis & Hill, Kent advises local, regional and national companies involved in residential, commercial and industrial construction, providing counsel on matters of litigation and arbitration, insurance, liability, contracts, and operations.

Rick Parrino, Plum Building Systems, LLC

Rick is general manager at Plum Building Systems in Waukee, Iowa. A past president of SBCA, he currently serves the association as chair of the Advocacy Committee and is also active on the Safety Committee.

Randy Rickels, Shelter Systems Limited

Starting his truss industry career in 2013 as a night shift assembler, Randy learned all production floor jobs and shortly moved to day shift. In 2016 he was promoted to lead production trainer and is responsible for hosting new employee orientations and overseeing all training efforts on the shop floor. In 2017 he was asked to take over the role of safety officer where he promotes a culture of safety and helps keeps Shelter Systems compliant with OSHA standards.
