Safety Tip: Gearing Up for Winter

John Howlin, Truss Plant Manager at BuilderUp, is gearing up for winter in Maryland. Like many component manufacturing operations, John’s production and yard workers are exposed to the elements so they take cold weather safety seriously. Here are some of BuilderUp’s best practices for staying safe when the temperature starts to drop.

  1. Stay hydrated; it’s just as important in cold weather as in hot weather.
  2. Dress for the weather.
    • Wear layers so you can adjust for changing conditions.
    • Stay dry with a wicking base layer and waterproof outer layer.
    • Cover as much of your exposed skin as you can, including your head.
  3. Stay well nourished.
  4. Take extra warming breaks and use cold weather gear, like hand warmers, for especially cold days to provide extra warmth.
  5. Know the signs and symptoms of the most common cold-induced illnesses and injuries including hypothermia and frostbite. Visit webmd.com for further guidance.
