With the June 1st effective date for Southern Pine (SP) design values right around the corner, now is a good time to review the guidance and state-of-the-art tools SBCA has shared this year with members to aid them through the design value transition period established by the American Lumber Standards Committee (ALSC).

The significant changes in SYP design values, published by the Southern Pine Inspection Bureau (SPIB) in Supplement 13 to the 2002 Standard Grading Rules for Southern Pine Lumber, prompted the SBCA Board of Directors to propose a design value policy for the structural components industry.  Understanding this policy, and the potential impacts downstream of the revised language in Appendix A of Supplement 13, is vital for every component manufacturer.

These SP design value changes for visually graded lumber create significant challenges for everyone going forward. One prime example is the potential for inconsistent enforcement due to the difficulty surrounding the June 1st effective date. As we move into June, watch for more guidance and tools from SBCA on this very important issue.
