The 2018 Liberty Mutual Workplace Safety Index reports that U.S. businesses spend more than one billion dollars a week on serious, nonfatal workplace injuries. Falls (both on the same level and to a lower level) once again topped the list of injury causes, with struck by injuries, overexertion, and slip/trip without a fall all making the top ten. These injuries alone cost employers almost $29 billion annually. Furthermore, NIOSH reports that falls are the second-leading cause of work-related deaths in the U.S., making up 14 percent of all worker fatalities over 11 years. Jobs with the highest rate of fatal falls were construction and extraction at 42.2 percent.
These statistics provide the foundation for NFC’s recent work with OSHA to develop safety posters as part of its partnership in the 2018 Safe+Sound Campaign, coming the week of August 13-19. Building on the work done for last year’s campaign, the group focused on top OSHA citations and injury/fatality sources for framing contractors to build a set of four jobsite safety posters:
- Prevent Slips, Trips & Falls on Walking Surfaces
- Avoid Overexertion & Musculoskeletal Injuries
- Don’t Be Caught Off-guard by Falling Objects & Equipment
- Avoid Falls from Elevated Levels
Each poster is available in English and Spanish and features the most important safety reminders for each area to reinforce the training available in NFC’s FrameSAFE program and to enhance framers’ involvement in this year’s Safe+Sound Campaign.
