As jurisdictions around the country begin to look at updating their local building codes, Component Manufacturers should make sure that their local jurisdictions are aware of an error that exists in the 2018 IBC regarding special inspections of metal plate connected wood trusses.

In April, ICC issued an Errata to Section 1705.5.2 after erroneously including a proposal that was withdrawn by the proponent during the 2016 ICC final action hearing process.

The error was pointed out thanks to the relationship that SBCA member Rick Parrino has with his local building officials.

CMs should reach out to their local building officials and ensure they are aware of the recently issued Errata. Having a relationship with local officials is an incredibly valuable resource to have, and CMs should take time to connect with them whenever possible. While holding this discussion, please consider learning about and getting involved with the local building official association in your area. Rick has found that his involvement in local associations, and providing plant tours to building officials, can really strengthen these critical relationships. It is always nice when building officials call on truss industry members to find out more about the design and installation of trusses.
